Cheboygan senior running back Dylan Brandt (24) finds a hole in the
line during Friday’s non-conference contest at Curtis Field in
Petoskey. The Chiefs fell to the Northmen, 21-12.

Sports EditorPETOSKEY, Mich. – The Cheboygan football team suffered
its first defeat this season Friday with a 21-12 loss to Petoskey. The
Northmen were able to shut down Cheboygan’s running game, limiting the

team’s only running touchdown with nine carries for 40 yards. Dylan
Brandt had nine carries for 22 yards while quarterback Austin
Blaskowski had four runs for 29 yards.Just like every other team that
Petoskey has beaten, the Northmen forced Cheboygan to the passing
game, where Blaskowski was 11-for-15 for 154 yards with a touchdown
and two interception.Brandt led with six catches for 98 yards and a
touchdown. Trevor Closs had three catches for 46 yards and Mike Wolf

takedowns and a sack. David Rush had five hits. Mike Pegish caused a
fumble and had four tackles. Matt Duffiney had two tackles and a
sack.“I was disappointed in the outcome, but extremely proud of
the effort,” said Chiefs Head Coach Jack Coon. “The two
major stumbling blocks for us were turnovers and we gave them too good
of field position. I think that the stats show that we had very much a
chance to win that game. We were 314 to their 204 in total
offense.“In big games like that, there are a couple of key
things you have to make go your way, and we didn’t,” he
continued. “The kicking game was a big part of that. We had some
opportunities to block some kicks and punts, and we didn’t do that.
But like I said, we will definitely learn from it. I thought we played
a real solid game, but they are a good team. I wouldn’t be a bit
surprised if they win out, going 9-0.”The Chiefs scored first
with just six seconds on the clock in the first quarter. The touchdown
was made as Blaskowski completed a 48-yard touchdown pass to Brandt.
The extra point was blocked.Petoskey came back with 7:30 in the second
quarter as Suter rushed in two yards to score. The extra point was
good, and the Northmen were up 7-6. Cheboygan bounced right back in 27
seconds later as Ingram rushed 16 yards to pay dirt. The two point
conversion failed and Cheboygan was up 12-7.Petoskey’s D.J.
VanSlembrouck got his team back on top with a 30-yard dash to the end
zone, and the team’s extra point was good. The Northmen went into half
time with a 14-12 lead. Both teams’ defenses dug in for the second half
as the Northmen scored the only touchdown. Suter’s 11-yard run was
just enough to help Petoskey get past Cheboygan for the 21-12
win.“We focus now on St. Ignace,” Coon added.
“That’s an arch rival coming to town. You don’t have time to sit
down and mull over what happened last week. You got to keep looking
ahead.”The Chiefs (4-1) resume Straits Area Conference play
hosting St. Ignace on Friday. In JV action, the Chiefs lost to the
Northmen 54-14 in Cheboygan, Thursday.Ryan Ernst led Cheboygan’s

Ernst. The two point conversion failed, leaving Cheboygan down
24-14.“We were able to move the ball against a very tough
Petoskey team in the first half,” said Chiefs Head Coach Scott
Kelley. “Unfortunately, we struggled to move the ball in the
second half and made some errors that led to easy opportunities for
Petoskey.”Cheboygan (3-2) plays in St. Ignace on Thursday. In
freshman play, the Chiefs tied the Northmen 28-28 Thursday in
Cheboygan.Dylan Wilkinson had 19 runs for 109 yards and two
touchdowns, while quarterback Eryn Eustice had 16 carries for 109
yards. Eustice was 7-for-11 for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Jake
Elmore had three catches for 40 yards and two touchdowns. Dylan
Wilkinson had four catches for 68 yards.Eustice completed a 10-yard
pass to Jake Elmore for the Chiefs’ first touchdown. A 16-yard hook-
and-lateral play ended up with Eustice hooking to Wilkinson, who
tossed back to Elmore for a touchdown. Wilkinson had the two point
conversion.Wilkinson then had a one-yard run for a touchdown, and

tackles, Wilkinson had six tackles and a fumble recovery, Jordan Yost
had four tackles, while Elmore had three tackles and forced a

that you don’t know how to feel. We played a team that is dominating
the Big North Conference at the freshmen level.“We’re happy
because we know that we have a heck of a squad,” he continued.
“And yet, disappointed because we’re one two-point conversion,
or one penalty, or one tackle, one pass, one block short of winning
this game.”Cheboygan (3-1-1) hosts the Inland Lakes JV team on
Thursday.
